Five Minuters
Mark Drury:
Mark spoke of his recent experience deployed to the bushfires in Victoria (Gippsland Area). He was part of a taskforce of 20 deployed at Mt. Hotham. This fire burnt 85,000 hectares. There was a massive effort to contain these fires. Victoria has lots of resources for firefighting – helicopters, bulldozers and other equipment. Mark said that the conditions were extremely dangerous.
He spent 6 days at Mt. Hotham and then moved to Hayfield where there was another 80,000 hectare fire – several people were killed and 23 houses burnt. Mark said that the firefighting in Victoria was very different, riskier and less safe than we do here. After that fire Mark was sent closer to Melbourne where it rained and put the fire out – allowing the team to go home.
