President Ian Woollard introduced our speaker for the night PDG Brian Beesley who spoke to us about Australian Rotary Health.
Brian provided us with an Australian Rotary Health Facts Booklet which held some very interesting information on what Australian Rotary Health is all about.
Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is a national, not-for-profit organisation which funds health research and provides community education about health in Australia. The organisation supports work on a broad range of health problems, but specialises in mental health. It is supported by Australian Rotary Clubs.
He provided us with an overview of those behind the scenes of Australian Rotary Health. He noted who the staff and representatives were and the amazing job that they do. He talked of the programs conducted under the umbrella of ARH and the benefits and changes they are making to people and communities at large.
Club Member Kevin Sharp spoke to us on Australian Rotary Health – Bowlscan, particularly the role our Club has played. This is an initiative that Kevin has been heavily involved with and one he is very proud of. He gave an interesting overview of the background of Bowlscan and its aims and objectives, with its main aim being the Awareness Program. He also gave us some insight on the change of name from Bowel Cancer Screening, which was used up until 1992, to Bowelscan. He also noted that the Rotary District 9650 Community Health Awareness Program commenced in 1986. The Bowelscan name was introduced by the National Committee as a more suitable name for the Public Awareness program. The Community Health Awareness Program known as Bowelscan was self funded for its 32 years. It relied on Rotary members and partner volunteers to promote the kits and had Pharmacy total support in all towns. There were seven (7) Testing Laboratories with some volunteers. This Program was supported by local Radio Stations, local newspaper media and TV networks and advertising was free for 4 years and paid for over the remaining 28 years. This was across the whole of District 9650. He also spoke to us about recent changes to Bowelscan.
PDG Brian Beesley then presented Awards to Bowelscan Committee Members for their hard work and dedication over the years. The following Rotarians received special mention and awards.
