District 9650 Conference March 2022
 A report on the presentation by PDG Maurie Stack
An exciting new development for Rotary in Australia
  • Background: The  Australian Rotary Foundation Trust was set up about 20 years ago to provide tax deductibility in Australia to The Rotary Foundation;
  • During the last 10 years, individual giving has grown, but club giving has declined significantly;
  • Rotary leaders in Australia have been seeking means of attracting Corporate giving to Rotary.
  • One major hurdle is that Rotary is highly decentralized (in Australia, 12,000+ members in 1,000+ clubs). Rotary has no central contact or reference point; Corporates are very centralized in their management;
  • Under the leadership of PDG Maurie Stack, Rotary Foundation Australia (RFA) has been established as a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI), with Maurie as Chairman and an extremely capable Board chosen from experienced Rotarians across Australia. RFA is one of several authorised Associate Foundations of The Rotary Foundation in regions around the Rotary world;
  • This RFA will allow tax deductible giving from corporates and individuals. All projects undertaken will have the same 7 Areas of Focus as The Rotary Foundation, and will operate under the same rules as Global Grants (including no buildings). As with Global Grants that have a minimum value of US$30,000 the RFA will have a minimum contribution of A$50,000 (a rounding of the US$30k);
  • BUT, with RFA, we can now fund projects in Australia, noting that this is where corporates want to “park their money” (Maurie’s words, read “donate”) under the well documented Corporate Engagement Program;
  • Corporates will have the opportunity to indicate on which of the available Rotary projects their money is spent, again noting that every project must address one or more of the Rotary Foundation 7 Areas of Focus;
  • Why do we believe this Corporate Engagement Program will work?
  • Corporate and philanthropic giving in Australia is significant and growing
  • Rotary has a proven track record of credibility
  • We deliver on our projects and have strong accountability
  • We are flexible in the areas where projects are undertaken – we are not a single cause organisation
  • We have very low overheads
  • What can we as individuals do? Firstly, we should actively promote the work of Rotary through RFA, and secondly, advise PDG Maurie of any potential philanthropic donors or corporates that the Directors of RFA could approach;
  • Projects planned include an Indigenous Knowledge Hub at UTS; Mental Health Workshops in Northern Australia aimed at Indigenous communities with high suicide rates; a Disaster Response Fund for Ukraine; an Eastern Australia Flood Appeal;
  • This is an exciting development that will allow Rotary in Australia to undertake major projects; it will have enormous PR exposure for Rotary; it will have the potential for strong membership growth.

 RE: Ian and Dianne Woolard  We have just completed a morning distributing your vouchers and vouchers from others. It was a bit heart wrenching to go and give something to these people, some who are trying to sort out their lives among the piles of rotting rubbish.   One has to wonder what inner strength they have that allows them to try and get on with their lives in such terrible conditions. Some of these folk have lived at their address almost their whole lives!. We did not take any photographs, or surnames or phone numbers but simply recorded the address and Christian name of the recipient. If anyone does need a photograph there are plenty on the net.   We did that for two reasons, so that we know we visited that house and if a donor requires more detail as to what we did with their donation.  Please pass onto all your members the sincere thanks of a few deserving folk in flood stricken South Lismore.   Also to your members with our sincere thanks and let them know how surprised and appreciative folk were when they saw who donated their voucher.
Today, and the next few weeks will be all what Rotary is all about! Kind regards, Brian Wheatley
